Farmer Achieves 7 bu/A Yield Increase with New One-Pass Post
RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C. – Corn and soybean producer Mark Benjamin was surprised when strips of his field treated with his incumbent one-pass system yielded 7 bu/A less than a new one-pass post challenger. Little did Benjamin know, this new herbicide system also proved itself in a 2009 Michigan State University Extension trial with higher yields, which brought a 6 percent economic return advantage over two passes of glyphosate.
Benjamin, a Williamston, Mich., farmer says he conducted an alternating side-by-side check of 24 rows of Lexar® herbicide vs. 24 rows of new Capreno® postemergence corn herbicide across one of his even, half-mile long fields. With soil types sometimes changing “every 100 yards” in his area, Benjamin knew he wanted to conduct the trial on a field with consistent soil type to accurately — and fairly — run the check. After seeing results of the multiple side-by-side strips harvested and weighed across the field, he knew which program to use for 2011: “When I looked at the price, ease of use and 7 bu/A difference, I knew I wanted to put Capreno on all my corn acres this year.”
This is a big commitment for a farmer who rarely runs a single program on his corn. “This year will be my first time doing a 100 percent post application spray. Since corn is going to be $6/bu, I want to go with Capreno because it [will help] get me an extra $42 an acre.”
