Every day we work together with you and our partners to create a sustainable future by protecting our people, our resources and our environment through our Stewardship programs. Each project is tackled in collaboration with our industry partners to ensure that we continue to protect the valuable tools that are used in homes, yards and in the fields, orchards and vineyards to guard against insects, diseases and weeds.

Reducing tillage in cotton production
In 2004, Bayer CropScience launched LibertyLink® cotton, a new variety with very high fiber quality and herbicide tolerance. Herbicide tolerant production systems provide effective weed control with reduced need for tillage. Reduced tillage is one way to safeguard soil structure and conserve soil moisture, which is particularly important in dryland cotton production areas. Reduced tillage also requires fewer inputs such as labor and herbicide, resulting in lower costs to the farmer. In addition to the improved fiber quality of LibertyLink® cotton, farmers also benefit from the unique spectrum of weeds controlled and the wide flexibility of application timing associated with the herbicide.
Increasing safety on the family farm
Bayer CropScience and Bayer Animal Health are supporting the responsible and ethical use of their products by sponsoring farm safety day camps with the Progressive Agriculture Foundation. The programme aims to reduce the incidence of agriculture-related accidents by increasing the awareness of potential dangers associated with living, visiting or working on farms and ranches. The safety programme is conducted throughout the United States and Canada, yet each camp is focused locally. The programme, directed towards youth from 8 to 13 years of age, includes safety training on: working around animals, all-terrain vehicles, bicycles, chemicals, electricity, farm equipment, fires, first aid, hidden hazards, lawn equipment, power take-offs and tractors. In 2004, the Progressive Agriculture Foundation conducted 310 camps reaching over 50,000 young people and mobilizing more than 23,000 adult and young-adult volunteers in rural communities. In the past five years, there has been a 17.5% reduction in farm deaths and injuries, in part due to preventative measures. Bayer CropScience is supporting this effort as part of its commitment to good stewardship – protecting people as well as natural resources and the environment.
